Is your Son or Daughter interested in music? Do they constantly sing around the house or to the radio? Then singing lessons can be a great way to encourage their passion, develop musicianship and core life skills!
Whats the best age to start singing lessons and whats the youngest age you teach?
The good news is there is no upper age limit to start singing lessons as the voice continues to mature throughout life so you can start learning to sing at any age!
However, I don't tend to take on children younger than 8 years old. This is for a few reasons. Firstly the voice and vocal folds are still very immature and it may not be appropriate to start 'formal' training before this age. Secondly private lessons require the student to be mature enough to concentrate and take instruction for 30 mins and to spend time practicing outside of lesson time, so If your child is between the ages of 8 and 10, the first step is to book a trial lesson with me so we can mutually agree they are physically and socially ready.
Once we agree to start, I always tailor my lessons to the individual child. For the youngest voices, lessons are based around musical play using the kodaly method and as we progress i will gently introduce them to basic technique (breathing, posture and pitch) and look at easy songs to learn.
For secondary age children, teenagers and adults, lessons take on a more 'traditional' approach looking at vocal technique in greater detail including warm ups, posture, breathing, pitch & interval training, musicianship, theory, repertoire and much more!
